Read Japan's Road to Popular Empowerment to learn

  • that women have had the vote only since 1947
  • that most men have had the vote only since 1947
  • why Japanese get to vote twice in national elections
  • why the first vote is usually wasted
  • which party chief had a starring role in a Disney movie
  • which foreign minister was simultaneously editor of a major newspaper

Celine Nisaragi came to Japan from America in 1972 and has lived in Tokyo ever since. A graduate of Newark State College in New Jersey, she is known more for her non-fiction essays than for her scholarly credentials, especially for her dozen years of contributing in both English and Japanese to the Mainichi newspapers and other publications in Japan.

She put her essayist's talent for imagery to work in order to create a story that sorts out Japan's political players and the teams and relates their deeds in the context of history. Since Japan is a country that idolizes winners but saves her true love for the underdog, she tells the story from the opposition parties' point of view.
